Silay, the Paris of Negros: Heritage Houses and Museums

They called Silay the Little Paris of Negros, for its music, its manners and its houses. The sugar money is mostly gone now, but the houses stayed. Some open their doors, one is resting, and a new one has just opened. This page is about walking slowly through other people's history, and treating it kindly.

The stay is at Bukaw, by the Malogo River in Silay.

Drive times on this page are approximate, from Silay City proper, not measured from our gate.

Last checked 27 October 2026.

The houses are a morning. A whole day on one road is in Day Trips.

Why Silay is called the Paris of Negros

In the sugar-boom years Silay became the island's cultural center. Planter families brought in European furniture and fashion, kept resident orchestras, and hosted visiting European opera and zarzuela companies. The town produced artists like the mezzo-soprano Conchita Gaston. The older form of the nickname is the Little Paris of Negros.

Balay Negrense has been closed since 2023 for a five-year conservation program. No reopening date has been announced. See it from the street.

Heritage houses you can enter

Two houses take visitors. Balay Negrense does not. It is closed for conservation, and the visit is the facade.
